Die lokale Elite von Adada: Antiochos, Sohn des Tlamoas

The question of the degree to which cities in the eastern provinces of the imperial period were dependent on their elites has been answered differently. However, the case of Adada, a small polis in central Pisidia, shows that members of the local elite were heavily involved in the financing of public buildings. Antiochos, the son of Tlamoas, occupied a leading position among them. A monument erected by him in honour of the governor P. Vigellius Saturninus dates his activity to the middle of the second century AD. Of the buildings he donated, the Temple of Aphrodite, the Temple of Zeus Megistos Sarapis and two stoas can be reliably localised in the city’s topography. He also erected workshops, which can be found in the immediate vicinity of the two stoas. Antiochos received the honorary titles of ktistes and hyios poleos for his building activities. The involvement of his wife and two sons in the building programme is remarkable. Antiochos arranged for the same titles to be bestowed on his sons. In this way he wanted to secure their future leading position among the councillors. His own leading position among the buleutai is emphasised by the four-time election as probulos.
