A Hoard of Gold Staters in the Name of Alexander III and Philip III from Myrmecium

Ιn 2022, a small red clay jug containing 30 Macedonian gold staters was found during excavations at Myrmecium, including 26 minted in the name of Alexander III and 4 of Philip III. This significant find is unique for the Cimmerian Bosporus, where similar hoards are unknown. The hoard incorporates issues of Amphipolis, Lampsacus, Abydus, Miletus, Sardes, Ake, Aradus, and Babylon. It illustrates the development of the currency during the reign of Philip III and a little later, showing that the lifetime and posthumous issues in the name of Alexander III continue to play a significant part in the gold coinage in circulation. This hoard’s latest coin, the Babylon issue of c. 311–300 BC, provides a terminus post quem for the concealment.
