The Trial of the Victorious Generals and ‘Alcibiades’ Shadow’ (Part 2)

Surikov Igor E.

The second part of the article dealing with the trial of the generals who won the Arginusae sea battle in 406 BC opens with a study of the legal aspects of the trial, which, in the author’s opinion, belonged to the εἰσαγγελία ἀσεβείας type. Then follows the analysis of the prosopographical data on persons connected with the trial and its results. Special attention is paid to the figures of Theramenes and Thrasybulus, who, on the one hand, were Alcibiades’ supporters, and, on the other hand, had personal reasons for the attack on their commanders. As a result, the conclusion is made that it is impossible to understand many aspects of the trial’s course without due regard to the role played in Athens at that time by Alcibiades (even if absent), whose return to military leadership was desired by many citizens.
